Held annually since 1999, the Architectural Review's Emerging Architecture Awards key aim is to 'celebrate the stars of tomorrow'.

From over 300 international submissions three practices were awarded the title this year: Architects Atelier Ryo Abe for the Shima Kitchen renovation project on Teshima Island, Japan; Carmody Groarke for Studio East Dining, a pop-up restaurant designed and built in ten weeks on the edge of the 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford; and Neri & Hu Design and Research Office (NHDRO) for The Waterhouse hotel complex on the South Bund in Shanghai, China, 'an intelligent paradigm for the creative reuse of historic structures, which has a wider and hopefully instructive resonance in China's current expansionist milieu.'

A further three practices were chosen as runners-up: AMID.Cero9 for their Diagonal 80 Industrial Building in San Agustin Del Gaudalix, Spain; Arquitecturia for their Ferreries Cultural Centre in Tortosa, Spain and Sekkei-Sha for HOUSE K, Saopporo, Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan.

Together with the 13 highly-commended projects, the top entries will form part of Emerging Architecture, on show at the Royal Institute of British Architects from 30 November until 1 March 2011.
