Art outside a gallery space is nothing new. But artists are increasingly breaking free from all boundaries and creating art that disappears over the horizon - literally.

Jim Denevan makes ephemeral circular drawings on sand, earth, and ice, which are then gently erased by waves and weather. Denevan's latest feat, which covered 12.5 square miles of Lake Baikal in Siberia, won the title of ‘largest land art installation’, but two months after its creation it had gone. Where does the value lie in such disappearing dalliances with art and ice? Mutualart.com interviewed Denevan to find out why an artist would spend months living in freezing conditions in Siberia - with nothing to show for it in the end.
