Three years after the project was first announced, the new, eagerly awaited Salvador Dali Museum opens today (11 January 2011) at 11.11 EST in St Petersburg, Florida.

Twice the size of its predecessor, the Surrealism-influenced concrete and glass façade features over 1,000 triangular panels and a helix-like staircase within its 67,000 square foot interior. Built to withstand a force 6 hurricane, the design is the work of Yann Weymouth of HOK, whose other projects include working with I.M. Pei on the Louvre pyramid in Paris.

The building will house 2,100 works and objects by the Surrealist master, including his greatest masterpiece, The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory,  as well as a theatre, community hall, café and shop.
