Documenting the performance art of Marina Abramović in pictures
An overview of the performance artist who explores her physical and emotional limits for her art
Ice cream, meringue, banana mousse, almond cake and cookie crumbs, all assembled together and flambéed with rum. While the variety of mediums used by Marina Abramović for her latest performance may resemble Nigella Lawson's shopping list, Volcano Flambé, developed by the Yugoslavian performance artist in collaboration with chef Kevin Lasko, doesn't solely focus of the taste buds: diners must don a white lab coat before being served the the $20 dessert, which is presented in wooden box which contains an MP3 player and pair of headphones.
For this 'multi-sensory intervention' Abramović's prerecorded voice urges the diners to listen to her instructions, close their eyes and breathe deep while the wooden box mysteriously transmogrifies into a flaming dessert.
Volcano Flambé which is currently available at Park Avenue Winter Restaurant (until 20 March) is the first in the series of four artist-chef collaborations conceived in associacion with the restaurant and the non-profit organisation Creative Time.
