'An experiment became a project, which became a product,' explains Jan Tichelaar, director of Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the oldest factory in the Netherlands, where Hella Jongerius made 300 Coloured Vases (Series 3).

These 300 unique vases - created as special collectors artwork to accompany the handmade, signed and numbered editions of the book Hella Jongerius, Misfit - will be exhibited at Design Miami/ Basel (14-18 June). Happening alongside Art Basel, Design Miami/Basel is a major international design fair and platform for contemporary design, with a lively programme of talks.

Phaidon are excited to be selling Jongerius' 300 Coloured Vases (Series 3) at this year's fair, where the vases will be showcased alongside a video of how they were made.

Each porcelain vase is signed, in typical Jongerius fashion, with her fingerprint. The emphasis being on craft - with the hand of the maker visible.

The vases can be purchased individually or in complimentary colour sets of 5, 6 or 7 vases. The accompanying collectors edition books are also unique and each matches the colour of the vase purchased and packaged in a custom-made box.

'Innovation is the highest priority,' explains Hella Jongerius, one of the most influential product designers working today. Jongerius has experimented with colour throughout her career. The first two series of Coloured Vases experimented with layers of industrial spray paint lacquers. This third series plays with the perception of colours that optically merge. The glazes added to the surface of the vases are a combination of traditional oxide recipes and synthetic colour transfers, with various layers applied on top of each other to unique effects, blending the best of traditional production processes with an exploration of vivid colour and design.
