One thing not to miss in New York

The New Museum, NYC's peerless art institution, is the top pick from our Wallpaper* City Guide this Frieze Week

It isn’t often that an art space has much in common with a rubbish bin. In actual fact, SANAA’s New Museum of Contemporary Art, launched in 2007, may be the only building to be clad in the same aluminium wire mesh as its city’s trash receptacles. When the design — a series of piled-up silvery boxes — was revealed in 2003, it looked delightful yet impossible (not to mention improbable, given its location on historically unsavoury Bowery). New York changes fast, though, and what once seemed so alien (a fine-art museum on a street once known for homeless shelters) now makes sense. Enjoying its moment, the area is rife with swank restaurants and hip hotels, and in 2013, the Hester Street Café took up residence in the museum itself.
