Each autumn, 400 booksellers in France and the wider Francophone world vote to decide on the best fine-art book published that year. The prize, entitled j’aime le livre d’art or I love the art book, is organised by the French Book Publishing association, SNE, and is a widely respected prize in the eyes of the country’s livre lovers.

Last night, Pascale Le Thorel, chair of the Fine Arts book Group, awarded this year’s prize to the French edition of Great Women Artists. Entitled, 400 Femmes Artistes, the book was praised by the organisation for its visual beauty and corrective qualities, when it came to art history.

“Long neglected and underestimated, the place of women in the art world is now major and recognised as such,” reads the prize’s citation. “Much more than a testimony about the aesthetic contribution of women artists, the book presents another vision of art history and its struggles for a greater diversity of expression.”

We certainly agree. To gain greater insight into this newly updated take on art herstory buy a copy of Great Women Artists here. It’s available in English here, and French, here
