Who said you had to grow out of wanting to stay in a treehouse?

This October two more 'tree rooms' - the 'UFO', by Bertil Harström of Inredningsgruppen and Marge Architects's 'Room with a View' - were added to the four already in operation at Treehotel, one of Sweden's most exciting new tourist destinations.

The 'hotel' is the brainchild of husband and wife team Britta Jonsson-Lindvall and Kent Lindvall, who, inspired into action by the documentary film The Tree Lover (Trädälskaren), which was shot nearby, decided to launch an innovative new project that combined architecture, sustainability, tourism, and fun.

Each of the units, which sleep between two and four, is architecturally unique (the couple forged the idea with a group of Swedish architect friends), with the four completed for the summer including such ingenious designs as the 'Birdsnest' (also by Inredningqsgruppen), which is entered using a retractable ladder, and the space-age 'Mirrorcube' (Tham & Videgård Architects), the reflective sides of which mean the structure virtually disappears into the canopy around it. At the heart of the project is the imperative to respect the natural environment and to minimise disruption both visually and physically and local, sustainable materials such as wood have been used throughout. The project also has an innovative approach to waste disposal: tree houses use either freezer toilets (which freeze waste for later removal) or “cinderellas”, which incinerate waste in an internal combustion chamber. If all goes to plan it is hoped a further 18 rooms by different architects will be constructed over the next five years.
